My apologies! I've spotted a couple of things I should put right:

It was not 'West Yorkshire', but South Yorkshire, where Hughes saw the fish die.
The tree planting scheme was proposed in 1972, not 1970.
It was The Sunday Times Weekend magazine that bought Hughes's poem 'The Black Rhino'.

Wonderful piece - thank you very much. I did not know about the memorial stone. How appropriate that it is sited near the source of the Taw. I live near the river in North Devon and each month walk a length of it near Bishops Tawton recording wading birds for WeBS, a survey organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. I often think of Ted as I am walking the banks. (My memories of Ted have been published in the Journal of the Ted Hughes Society as 'The Tribe of Ted'). I very much agree with you that writers should try to emulate Ted's impassioned work as activists and campaigners. He remains a great inspiration. Thank you again.
